Good news! We now have our own online merch store where you can order a sweet Open Skies tee shirt, hooded sweatshirt, or coffee mug! We also have some really nice prints of photos our group has taken on the property. This is only the start though and we hope to have a ton of new custom designs coming soon, so keep checking back for new items. All of our profits from the store are going to be invested directly into the property. We have a lot of expenses ahead of us, so every dollar helps!
The photo above shows the commissary at Calumet Air Force Station as it appeared circa 1987. The commissary was a branch of the main commissary at K.I. Sawyer AFB near Marquette and was supplied from there. The store was small but well stocked with food and household necessities for the servicemen and their families living at the station. Personnel could purchase frozen meat and vegetables, canned goods, bread, snacks, and dairy products here. They could even submit special orders for fresh butchered meat to be delivered. The nearest civilian store was a half hour away in the town of Calumet, or 45 minutes away in Houghton/Hancock, so the convenience of an on-base commissary was greatly appreciated by the isolated residents of Calumet Air Force Station.
In addition to the commissary, Calumet Air Force Station also operated a Station Exchange in the main administration building. Similar to the commissary, it was supplied from the Main Exchange and Clothing Sales store at K.I. Sawyer AFB. The exchange offered a wide variety of household items, ranging from pots and pans to motor oil and hand tools. If the store didn't have what you were looking for, it could be ordered from K.I. Sawyer and it would be delivered on the next supply run from the base.
