This past Saturday, a group from Northology Adventures became our first official tour group at the Open Skies Project! They were in town as part of the Copper Harbor cleanup weekend put on by the Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition (KORC) and the Keweenaw Adventure Company and were helping clean the trails and campsites out at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. They reached out to us to inquire about visiting the former Calumet Air Force Station and we happily invited their group up to tour the property! On Saturday, a group of about twenty people in their Jeeps and trucks arrived and marked the first official group tour we have had visit the property. Ian and Ashlee led them on a guided tour through the streets of the radar station where they learned the history of the base from our knowledgeable guides. They also saw the extensive amount of damage and disrepair around the property, and learned more about our plans and the work we have ahead of us. In total, they spent almost two hours exploring the station and all of the history it has to offer. You can check out some of their pictures on Instagram @northologyadventures and stay tuned to their website and magazine for further news and all of their awesome overlanding adventures!
We know there is a lot of interest in exploring this awesome property, but we ask people to please not trespass to do so. For anyone interested in touring the Calumet Air Force Station, please reach out to us through our contact page. All tours and visits to the property must be arranged with us ahead of time, so please do not just walk or drive up the mountain (even if the gate is open). This is for everyone's safety and the ongoing preservation of the property. We're working to schedule some regular dates for tours as well, so stay tuned for more information about that soon!
